The Learning Environment

We, as teachers , can predict behaviour in classroom settings. We can teache through the environment and its materials. Physical surroundings are one of the factors that effect learning both positive and negative.

The class that I did my observation was a very small class with twenty-five students. Inside was too hot and I even couldn’t breathe after a while the students couldn’t breathe, too. He teacher organised the class in “U” shape in order to control the class and to monitor all of them easily. Inside of he classroom was too crowded , the walls, the cupboards , blackboard , door, windows, even the ceiling. Teacher made this decoration for the sake of students, to take their attention , to make pmake them live and feel the language. She said that “ If they see the language everywhere, they will be familiar to it, they will be exposed to it.” But I think she misses something. All of those decorations, writings are too much for the exposure. They impede students’ concentration. They cannot listen to the teacher.Throughout the lesson, two students were engaged by the caterpillars on their cupboards. And also the temperature of the class is not appropriate for language learning because it was too hot.Moreover. some of the students asked teacher to open the window. Because this, some of the students were sleepy, they seem that they weren’t listening to the lesson.

On the contrary, teacher tried to take their attention by his voice and intonation. While telling the story, she used mime, gestures, body language and intonation and she moved around the class. This was enjoyable fort he students as most of them were keenly listening to the teacher.

The “U” shape seating arrangement is good for monitoring but sometimes it may cause noise in the class. Some students who has tendencies to talk to each other, will create chaos.

While this lesson was helding up, I observed a child which didn’t recognise my existance. He was happy at the beginning of the lesson., he attended lesson, participated in the activities but after a while , while they were doing listening exercise, he lost his concentration , he looked around the class, find something to stare at and think something about that thing. It could easily be understood that he wasn’t in the classroom and when the teacher started to tell the story in a very enjoyable way and loudly, he again came back to lason and attended the activities. When it started to be too hot, he started to mumble. Again, he lost his concentration. As we can understand there are rises and falls in his concentration level due to the activities and the visual attraction of the classroom.

If we are to talk about my classes, they are better than this class. There aren’t too much decoration and the seating is arranged the same as I observed. My class is a big one including twenty students. The seatings are comfortable and the temperature is on the average. I use a lot of 3D materials while I am teaching instead of making decorations. I also use my body language and PPTs to increase the success of learning environment. My students like to watch, listen and touch. That’s why, all the things that I do, always works.
